To Mask or not to mask?

Masking fluid is such an amazing tool for watercolor! This liquid is painted on the paper where you want to protect the white and allowed to dry. When the painting over the making is done, simply rub off the dried masking and voila! You have beautifully white paper revealed. For the times that you want to preserve the white (or any light wash that you have done), and do a lucious wash over it, masking fluid is the answer! In this piece, I used it too mask the sails, boat and the reflections of the sail in the water.

Of course there are times that I decide not to use it and paint carefully arouhd the areas that I want to leave white, but I never regret using it when I take the time to do it. The Sailboat Project is a great example of a piece that really was enhanced by keeping that white protected. This is the kind that I used on this piece. https://amzn.to/4bHApo2

To mask or not to mask? It is an excellent question. :)
